WHO IS ZANETA MASCARENHAS?
- Zaneta Mascarenhas is the pre-selected Labor candidate for the WA federal seat of Swan, which is located north and west of the Swan River, Canning River and the City of Canning in the south;
- Zaneta was born in Kalgoorlie and grew up in Kambalda which is a nickel mining town where her dad was a fitter and her mum a kindergarten school cleaner;
- Her passion for politics came when she was at her first job at Woolies and got bullied by the supervisor. The union stepped in and made the supervisor apologise and that is when she saw the value of unions;
- She moved to Perth for university and studied science and engineering at Curtin University and served as the Curtin Student Guild President and the NUS West President;
- For the next fifteen years she worked as an engineer across sites in WA and VIC, and for the last decade has helped mining companies develop policies to address climate change;
- Together with her husband and two children they call East Victoria Park their home;

WHAT IS THE FEDERAL ELECTORATE OF SWAN LIKE?
- The federal WA seat of Swan is located north and west of the Swan River, Canning River and the City of Canning in the south , and includes suburbs such as Ascot, Burswood, Como, Manning, Victoria Park etc – (you can find out more on the suburbs on the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) website);
- The seat of Swan is currently held by Liberal MP Steve Irons;
- The demographics of Swan is diverse with those coming from a Chinese background accounting for (7.2%) of the electorate’s population. In addition those coming from an Indian background account for (3.9%) and Malaysias (2.6%);
WHY IS ZANETA PUTTING HER HAND UP AND RUNNING AS A CANDIDATE?
- Zaneta is running as a candidate because she wants more leadership on climate change in order to enable industries and workers to make a fair transitions to a lower carbon economy;
- She is also committed to fighting for families to ensure a fair and just society;
