Meet RACHAEL JACOBS – Who Is Running For The Seat Of GRAYNDLER For The Greens Party

WHO IS RACHAEL JACOBS

  • Rachael Jacobs is the pre-selected Greens candidate for the NSW federal seat of Grayndler which is located in and around the Inner Western suburbs of Sydney;
  • Rachael is a proud Indian Australia, woman of colour, a migrant, refugee advocate, a renter, an education expert and a community artist;
  • She is a lecturer in Education at Western Sydney University and was formerly a high-school teacher;
  • She is a community artist, working with migrant and refugee communities, and she runs her own intercultural dance school;
  • She is also a writer and have written columns for The Guardian, Sydney Morning Herald, and The Conversation. She has also appeared on QandA and The Drum;
  • She is also a founding member of Teachers for Refugees, and a board member of various arts organisations;

WHAT IS THE FEDERAL ELECTORATE OF GRAYNDLER LIKE?

  • The federal NSW seat of Grayndler is located in and around the Inner Western suburbs of Sydney, and covers suburbs of Balmain, Balmain East, Enmore, Haberfield, Leichardt, Petersham, Rozelle etc – (you can find out more on the suburbs on the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) website);
  • The seat of Grayndler is currently held by the Labor Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese;
  • It has an interesting demographic with a mixture of those coming from a Scottish and Irish backgrounds as well as those coming from some sort of Chinese (5.0%) and Vietnamese (1.5%) backgrounds;

WHY IS RACHAEL PUTTING HER HAND UP AND RUNNING AS A CANDIDATE?

  • Rachael wants to ensure the voices of the people of Grayndler are heard on issues like climate action, refugee rights and public education;
  • She also wants to ensure the voices of our minority communities are heard and she wants to see protections put in place for queer and trans Australians;
  •  Rachael also wants the electorate to hear new ideas on housing as a human right and ending profit for care models in spaces such as Early Childhood Education or Aged Care;
